Our house has been an ongoing experiment in renovating a 1968 bungalow into an energy efficient home for a sustainable future. We monitor all electricity usage, heat loss and renewable energy gains and have ~ 7 years of data now accumulated. The house has passive solar design, insulation to R-20 or greater in the walls, R-65 or greater in the attic, outside and inside foundation insulation. An air source heat pump is used for heating with extra heat on really cold days from a high efficiency Opel wood insert fireplace. Solar thermal is used for hot water heating and a drain water heat recovery system is in place to recapture drain water heating. Our family of 6 attempts to use hot water on sunny days and match our usage to production to optimize efficiency. We also monitor all electricity usage through a TED 5000. The whole house is an ongoing R&D experiment in validating true cost efficiencies and value from renewable energy and from changing patterns of usage. So far, we have validated true costs and returns from each design aspect and have also validated usage patterns for typical families, along with optimal behaviours for those who want to be as efficient as possible.
